Why You Should Check Search Console Before Rewriting a Page That Lost Traffic
Before you rewrite a page that lost traffic, open Google Search Console and make sure the page actually has a content problem. Too many teams see a dip, panic, and start rewriting headings like they are hiding evidence. Google’s own Performance report is designed to show whether the page lost impressions, lost clicks, slipped in average position, or was simply hit by lower demand. Those are not the same problem, and treating them like one is how decent pages get ruined.
If impressions are steady but clicks fell, you may have a CTR problem. If both impressions and average position slide, you may have a ranking problem. If the drop is query-specific, that usually tells you more than another full rewrite ever will. Compare queries, compare date ranges, and look at the exact page instead of the whole site. A lot of “content refreshes” are really just shortcuts for people who don’t want to look at the boring report first.
Then run the page through Google’s URL Inspection tool. That is where you find the stuff copy changes cannot fix: indexing gaps, Google-selected canonicals that disagree with yours, crawl issues, or a page version Google has not yet properly processed. If Google is seeing the wrong canonical or struggling to index the URL, rewriting paragraph three is mostly theater. This is also where outside technical SEO help can actually earn its keep, because somebody needs to fix the plumbing before anybody starts polishing the faucet.
The practical move is simple: check the data, separate demand shifts from ranking losses, then decide whether the page needs better content, better snippets, stronger internal links, or a technical fix. Rewriting first and investigating second feels productive, but it is usually just a nicer-looking way to waste a week. For agencies and in-house teams alike, this is one of those basic workflows that saves clients from paying for the wrong kind of SEO work.
