What to Do After Google’s March 2026 Core Update

Last Updated: August 14, 2026By
Google’s March 2026 core update is over, which is good news for anybody who has spent the last two weeks refreshing Search Console like it owes them money. According to Search Engine Land’s recap, the rollout ran from March 27 to April 8 and produced a lot more churn than the previous core update. If your rankings moved, this is the part where you stop guessing and start comparing what actually changed.
The bad move now is panic-editing half the site because one dashboard looks ugly for 48 hours. Google’s own core updates guidance is still pretty blunt: there is usually nothing “wrong” to fix in the technical sense, and the better move is to review whether your pages are genuinely the most helpful result for the queries they were winning before. That’s less exciting than hunting for a secret penalty switch, but it is also how real recoveries usually start.
The practical play is simple. Pull pre-update and post-update data in Search Console, look for page groups that slipped together, and ask whether those pages are thin, stale, too generic, or just a worse answer than what is ranking now. If service pages dropped, the issue is often weak proof, vague copy, or location pages that all say the same thing with the city name swapped out. If blog posts drop, the problem is often soft intent matching and excessive filler. This is also where a strong content strategy, better internal linking, or external SEO help can actually earn their keep, because random rewrites without a diagnosis are just expensive cardio.
The main takeaway is not to do nothing. It’s to do the boring, useful stuff instead of the dramatic stuff. Review the losers, compare them to the pages now outranking you, improve substance before polish, and give the changes time to settle. Core updates are usually a reminder that Google is trying to rank the page that helps the searcher fastest, not the one with the loudest SEO theory of the week.
